Our visit to the "Big Church"

So when Ben and I aren't teaching our lovely hungarian students, we like to go exploring. We decided to finally climb the "Big Church," and see what all the fuss was about. The climb was not for those afraid of heights, cramped quarters or a fear of dying. Just kidding, it wasn't that bad! However, more than once while climbing the stairs I did feel the boards shift beneath my feet!

Here's a little history about the church: It was built between 1803 and 1822 in the classical style. It is the largest Protestant church in Hungary (it seats about 3,000 people). It is one of the main symbols of Debrecen and for centuries the city has been known as the "Calvinist Rome."

Looking at the other tower.
We were glad this didn't go off while we were up there!
Looking down at the main square.
Happy we made it!
Taking a break before we climb down.
