Once we were in Sárospatak we took in a few sites along the way, but our main objective was to find the castle. The castle was built in the middle ages and served as a strategic location for wars. Today it is one of the best preserved castles in Hungary.
The castle reminded me of something you would see in Scotland, even though I have never been to Scotland. It just had the old medieval feel to it. I kept waiting for someone dressed as a knight to come riding through the trees. The castle and town just has that "old world charm" that is hard to find, especially for us amerikai.
After the castle visit we had lunch and then went back on the train headed towards home. This time it only took about an hour to get home to Debrecen. The scenery out the train window was so green it looked almost fake to me. We really loved our time in the country side of Hungary and being in smaller towns for a change. It makes you feel kind of special to think you were the only people from your state to climb that particular hill or visit that particular castle that day (or even possibly for the year).
